Champawat: A Sikh devotee travelling to attend the annual Jod Mela at Reetha Sahib Gurdwara in Uttarakhand’s Champawat district died after falling into a deep gorge on Saturday, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Lakhwinder Singh (32), a resident of Nanakmatta in Udham Singh Nagar district.
According to Champawat Kotwali Station House Officer B.S. Bisht, the incident took place around 5 pm on the Banlekh-Laluwapani road near an open gym.
Police said Lakhwinder Singh was travelling to the religious fair along with his companions when the group halted briefly during the journey. He reportedly sat on a roadside parapet to rest.
While sitting there, Singh allegedly lost his balance and fell nearly 100 metres into a gorge, officials said.
Rescue teams were rushed to the spot, but Singh had died on the spot due to the severity of the fall.
The police later recovered the body from the gorge and informed his family members about the tragedy.
Further legal formalities are being carried out by the local administration.
