Chandigarh: The Indian Air Force stepped in to assist firefighting operations in Himachal Pradesh after a massive forest fire spread rapidly across the hills near Kasauli, prompting authorities to launch aerial water-dropping missions.
Officials said Air Force helicopters were deployed to contain the flames, repeatedly drawing water from Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake before carrying out sorties over the affected forest region. The helicopters released large quantities of water over burning stretches as emergency teams struggled to control the fast-moving blaze from the ground.
The wildfire is believed to have intensified due to prolonged dry conditions, rising temperatures and strong winds, which allowed the flames to spread quickly across the forested terrain.
Authorities stated that aerial support became necessary after ground crews faced difficulties accessing several affected locations in the hilly region. The operation was aimed at preventing the fire from expanding further towards nearby residential and sensitive areas.
Visuals from the area showed helicopters hovering above Sukhna Lake to collect water before heading towards the smoke-covered forests in Himachal Pradesh.
Forest department personnel, disaster response teams and local administration officials remained stationed in the region while monitoring the situation continuously. Efforts were ongoing to bring the fire under control and minimise damage to wildlife and vegetation.
Officials have not yet confirmed the exact extent of forest area affected by the blaze, though assessments are currently underway. Authorities also appealed to people to avoid entering forest zones and cooperate with emergency teams during the ongoing operation.
