New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called on citizens across the country to remain alert and adopt safety measures as large parts of India continue to experience extreme heat conditions and rising temperatures.

In a public message shared on social media, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of protecting oneself during the ongoing heatwave and urged people to stay cautious amid the harsh weather.

He advised citizens to drink sufficient water regularly, avoid dehydration and carry water while stepping outdoors. Modi also encouraged people to extend help to others by offering drinking water and assistance to those affected by the scorching conditions.

Highlighting the dangers associated with prolonged exposure to heat, the Prime Minister said symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, weakness and severe fatigue should not be ignored, as they could quickly develop into serious heat-related illnesses including heatstroke.

He particularly expressed concern for children, elderly citizens and outdoor workers, saying these groups are more vulnerable during extreme summer conditions.

The Prime Minister urged people to remain attentive toward family members and neighbours, especially senior citizens, and regularly check on their wellbeing during the heatwave. He advised people to encourage the elderly to remain indoors during peak afternoon hours and stay adequately hydrated.

Modi also appealed for compassion towards animals and birds suffering in the severe heat. He encouraged citizens to place bowls of water outside homes, offices and shops to help birds and stray animals survive the intense temperatures.

Several regions across India are currently witnessing extreme heat conditions, with temperatures crossing dangerous levels in many northern and central states. According to meteorological authorities, some areas have reported temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius, while certain locations have entered the severe heatwave category after crossing 47 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department has continued issuing heatwave alerts for multiple states as the prolonged hot spell shows little immediate relief in several parts of the country.
