Jaipur: A disturbing case of alleged long-term domestic violence has come to light in Jaipur, reigniting public concern over abuse within marriages after a 36-year-old woman reportedly died by suicide following years of harassment.
Police have registered a case against her husband, Gautam Meena, an executive engineer posted in Tonk, after allegations of repeated physical and mental abuse surfaced along with video recordings reportedly recovered from the victim’s phone.
The deceased, identified as Anu Meena, was married in 2015. Her family has alleged that she was subjected to sustained cruelty over the years, claiming that incidents of violence often escalated when her husband was under the influence of alcohol. They say she endured the abuse silently in the hope that the situation would eventually improve.
The couple’s children have also given disturbing accounts of their home environment. Their 10-year-old son told investigators that he had frequently seen his father assaulting his mother. He recalled one incident in which the man allegedly returned home in anger, damaged household property, and attacked Anu during a dispute.
The child further stated that his mother often suffered from health issues and would depend on him for basic care during episodes of weakness. Their younger daughter also described repeated fights between her parents, including arguments that took place during family outings and social gatherings.
According to police and family members, Anu died by hanging herself on April 7 after what is alleged to be prolonged mental and physical trauma. It is also claimed that she was on a video call with her husband shortly before taking the extreme step.
Neighbours alerted her family after discovering the incident, and she was rushed for medical help. Despite efforts to revive her, she was declared dead.
In another troubling development, relatives said the couple’s son later accessed his mother’s mobile phone and found multiple videos, which allegedly show instances of verbal abuse and heated arguments involving the husband.
Anu’s mother said her daughter had often spoken about difficulties in her marriage, but the family never expected such a tragic outcome. She also said she missed a call from Anu on the day of the incident, a moment she now regrets deeply.
Family members further alleged that despite repeated incidents of violence, reconciliation attempts were made over the years, with the husband allegedly promising change after each episode of abuse. They also claimed he showed no remorse following the incident and made dismissive remarks about possible legal consequences.
Police have initiated a detailed investigation into the case. Statements from family members have been recorded, and officials are examining digital evidence along with CCTV footage and other material to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.
