Shopian: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out search operations at two locations in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday, including a seminary that was recently declared an unlawful entity by authorities.

Officials said NIA teams reached Darul Uloom Sirajul Uloom in the Imam Sahib area during the early hours and conducted extensive searches on the premises. The institution, which provides religious as well as formal education to hundreds of students, was officially banned last month as part of a broader crackdown on organisations facing scrutiny over alleged unlawful activities.

In a parallel operation, another NIA team searched the residence of Shahzada Aurangzeb, the former chief of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami in Jammu and Kashmir, located in Molu Chitragam area of Shopian.

Security personnel remained deployed at both locations while officials examined documents and other materials as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact nature of evidence being sought or whether any incriminating material was recovered during the raids.

The action is being viewed as part of intensified efforts by central agencies to investigate suspected links between banned organisations and activities considered a threat to national security.

The recent declaration of Darul Uloom Sirajul Uloom as an illegal entity had already triggered attention across the region, given its role as an educational institution with a large student base.

Further details regarding the operation and its findings are expected once investigators complete the preliminary assessment of the materials collected during the searches.
