Kushinagar: The National Commission for Women took suo motu cognisance on Saturday of the horrific murder of a 15-year-old girl from Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, whose decapitated and mutilated body was discovered inside a train coach in Lucknow. In an official statement, the commission highlighted that preliminary reports point toward a suspected case of honour killing or hate crime, after it emerged that the teenager was allegedly killed by her own family members over an interfaith relationship.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has formally communicated with the Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh, issuing strict directives for an immediate, impartial, and time-bound criminal investigation into the tragedy. The central women’s rights watchdog has mandated the state police department to submit a comprehensive Action Taken Report within seven days, outlining the precise progress of the ongoing homicide probe.

The stomach-churning crime unfolded on May 17, when railway security personnel recovered the mutilated torso of the minor stuffed inside a trunk within a compartment of the Chhapra-Gomti Nagar Express at the Gomti Nagar Railway Station in Lucknow. Following intense tracking, local police subsequently recovered the victim’s severed head from a village pond in Kushinagar, revealing that her limbs had also been systematically severed and packed separately in plastic bags to erase evidence.

According to senior law enforcement officials, the victim’s father initially assaulted the teenager at their residence. Following a subsequent self-harm attempt by the distressed girl, the father allegedly orchestrated a cold-blooded execution plan in conspiracy with his sister and brother-in-law. Investigators revealed that the father strategically sent his wife and sons away from the house before executing the murder, subsequently transportating the dismembered remains across provincial railway lines.

The state police have since arrested the father and his two relatives, charging them with murder, criminal conspiracy, and destruction of evidence based on confessions linking the execution to the family’s deep-seated opposition to the girl’s interfaith associations. In its official notice, the NCW has demanded specific disclosures from the Uttar Pradesh Police regarding the statutory sections invoked in the First Information Report, the status of accused interrogations, the recovery of weapon assets, and the analysis of digital evidence like CCTV footage and mobile call detail records. Furthermore, the federal body has ordered state authorities to ensure robust protective security for other vulnerable family members and crucial witnesses connected to the judicial case.
