New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended a gesture of cultural diplomacy by gifting his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba an exquisite set of vintage moonstone ramen bowls accompanied by silver chopsticks. The gift is a carefully crafted blend of Indian craftsmanship and Japanese dining traditions, symbolizing friendship between the two nations.
The centerpiece of the set is a large brown moonstone bowl, complemented by four smaller bowls, designed to reflect Japan’s celebrated donburi and soba rituals. The bowls are paired with intricately made silver chopsticks, combining elegance with practicality.
What makes the gift even more special is its origin and craftsmanship. The moonstone, sourced from Andhra Pradesh, is prized for its shimmering adularescence and is traditionally associated with love, harmony, and protection. The base of the main bowl is made from Makrana marble, the same stone used in the Taj Mahal, and is decorated in Rajasthan’s parchin kari inlay technique using semi-precious stones.
The carefully chosen gift highlights India’s intent to intertwine heritage artistry with contemporary cultural relevance, while also nodding to Japan’s deep-rooted food traditions. Officials said the present underscores the shared respect for tradition, aesthetics, and craftsmanship that both India and Japan cherish.
