Greater Noida: A 24-year-old woman allegedly died after jumping from the terrace of her matrimonial home in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar district following alleged harassment over dowry demands, police said on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Deepika, who had married Hrithik, a resident of Jalpura village, around one-and-a-half years ago.
According to police, the incident took place late Sunday night under the jurisdiction of Ecotech-3 police station. Deepika was rushed to Sharda Hospital after falling from the terrace of the three-storey house, where doctors declared her dead.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Shailendra Kumar Singh said a case was registered based on a complaint filed by the woman’s father, Sanjeev Nagar.
Police have arrested Deepika’s husband Hrithik, 26, and her father-in-law Manoj. Further legal proceedings are underway.
In his complaint, Sanjeev Nagar alleged that his daughter had called him on Sunday afternoon in a distressed condition and told him that her in-laws were assaulting and harassing her over dowry.
He claimed that the family was demanding a Toyota Fortuner SUV along with an additional Rs 50 lakh in cash.
According to the complaint, Nagar and some relatives visited Deepika’s matrimonial home around 7 pm and attempted to resolve the dispute through discussions with her in-laws.
However, around 12.30 am, the family allegedly received a call from the in-laws informing them that Deepika had fallen from the roof and had been taken to hospital.
“When I reached the hospital, I found my daughter lying dead,” Nagar alleged in the complaint.
Police said seven people named in the complaint were allegedly present in the house at the time of the incident. Authorities are continuing the investigation into the case.
