Chandigarh: A Chandigarh-based businessman has approached police after allegedly receiving extortion threats demanding Rs 2 crore from an unidentified caller who claimed links with the Lawrence gang.

Following the complaint, Chandigarh Police registered a Zero FIR and later transferred the matter to the Kharar City Police Station for detailed investigation.

The complainant, Lovepreet Singh, a resident of Sector-127’s Sante Majra Colony, informed authorities that he also operates an office under the name Waheguru Productions in Sector 22-B.

According to the complaint, the businessman received a threatening voice message on the morning of April 14 from an unknown number. The caller allegedly introduced himself as “Harry Boxer” and claimed to be acting on behalf of the Lawrence gang.

Police sources said the caller allegedly demanded Rs 2 crore and warned of severe consequences if the amount was not arranged within 24 hours.

What has intensified concern is that the caller reportedly mentioned personal details about the businessman’s family, including the names of his wife and daughter, allegedly to establish credibility and create fear.

The accused also allegedly referred to the complainant’s business locations and issued threats of physical harm if the demand was ignored.

The businessman submitted voice recordings and other digital evidence to investigators, stating that the threats left his family deeply shaken and fearful for their safety.

Initially, a Daily Diary Report was recorded at Sector 22 police station. During preliminary examination, police found sufficient grounds to treat the complaint as a serious cognisable offence.

A Zero FIR was subsequently lodged at Sector 17 police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to extortion and criminal intimidation before the matter was formally handed over to Punjab Police for further investigation in Kharar.

Investigators are now analysing call detail records, audio samples and technical evidence to trace the identity and location of the suspect.

Police officials said cyber and forensic teams are assisting in verifying the authenticity of the voice recording and identifying whether the threats originated from organised criminal networks or were part of a wider extortion racket targeting businessmen in the region.
