Lucknow: A devastating spell of stormy weather and heavy rainfall swept through parts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, claiming at least 33 lives and leaving widespread destruction across several districts, officials said.

The extreme weather hit five districts particularly hard, including Bhadohi, Fatehpur and Budaun, where strong winds caused structural collapses, uprooted trees and disrupted electricity supply.

According to officials, most of the fatalities were linked to falling walls, collapsed rooftops and other storm-related accidents as the sudden weather system moved rapidly through the affected areas.

Several injured people were shifted to nearby hospitals, while local emergency teams were deployed to clear roads, restore services and assist residents impacted by the destruction.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took stock of the situation and directed district officials to carry out immediate relief and rescue operations. He also ordered prompt financial compensation for the families of those killed and instructed authorities to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.

Officials have been asked to conduct rapid damage assessments and extend all possible assistance to households affected by the severe weather.

The state disaster response machinery has been placed on alert as weather experts warned of unstable atmospheric conditions that may trigger more rain and thunderstorms in isolated pockets.

Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain cautious and avoid venturing outdoors during periods of intense wind or lightning activity.

The administration said continuous monitoring is underway, with local teams coordinating restoration work to minimise disruption and ensure public safety.
