Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party leader Himanta Biswa Sarma officially began his second consecutive term as the Chief Minister of Assam on Tuesday. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Veterinary Ground in the Khanapara area of Guwahati, where Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy. This landmark event signifies the establishment of the third successive National Democratic Alliance government in the state, following a historic victory in the recent assembly elections where the coalition secured a commanding 102 seats out of the 126-member house.

The grand ceremony was attended by a host of high-profile dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Other notable attendees included Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Pabitra Margherita, alongside various chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from other states and BJP president Nitin Nabin. Sarma was joined by his family members, including his mother Mrinalini Devi, his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, and his children Nandil and Sukanya, as he took his oath in front of a large gathering of supporters and officials.

Four other ministers were also inducted into the state cabinet during the ceremony. These include Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog from the BJP, Atul Bora representing the Asom Gana Parishad, and Charan Boro from the Bodoland Peoples’ Front. The diverse composition of the newly formed cabinet reflects the collaborative nature of the governing alliance, which saw the BJP winning 82 seats while its partners, the AGP and BPF, secured 10 seats each. This collective mandate underscores the electorate’s support for the alliance’s governance model and its vision for the future of the province.

This second term for Sarma is expected to prioritize the continuation of major infrastructure projects and social welfare programmes that defined his previous tenure. The administration’s focus remains on enhancing the state’s economic development and ensuring that the benefits of governance reach all sectors of the population. With the new cabinet now in place, the government is poised to address the evolving needs of the state through a series of dedicated policy initiatives and a focus on maintaining regional stability and prosperity.
