Chennai: In a decisive turn of events six days after the assembly election results, the path for actor-turned-politician Vijay to form the government in Tamil Nadu has been cleared. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which secured two seats in the elections, ended three days of political suspense by formally handing over its letter of support to Vijay’s Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Saturday evening. This move successfully pushed the TVK-led alliance to the required majority mark of 118. Within minutes of the VCK’s announcement, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also declared the unconditional support of its lone MLA, further strengthening the incoming administration’s position.

With these new alliances, the TVK’s support base has surged to 120 MLAs in the 234-member assembly—two seats beyond the simple majority threshold. The alliance now comprises the TVK (108 seats), Congress (5 seats), CPI (2 seats), CPI(M) (2 seats), VCK (2 seats), and IUML (1 seat). Despite the breakthrough, the Congress party has reportedly moved its five legislators to Hyderabad to prevent potential horse-trading. Sources indicate that Melur MLA P. Vishwanathan is leading this group and is a frontrunner for a ministerial berth once the new cabinet is sworn in.
