Chandigarh: After a brief spell of dry weather, Punjab and Chandigarh are likely to witness a fresh change in weather conditions beginning May 11, with the Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert for thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the region.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, temperatures have risen slightly over the past 24 hours, registering an increase of 0.8 degrees Celsius. Despite the upward trend, temperatures continue to remain nearly five degrees below the seasonal average, preventing any immediate heatwave concerns.
Weather officials said clear skies and dry conditions are expected to prevail on May 9 and May 10. However, atmospheric changes triggered by a fresh western disturbance are expected to alter conditions from May 11 onward, bringing rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorm activity that may continue until May 14.
Among all districts, Bathinda recorded the highest temperature at 38.1 degrees Celsius, making it the warmest location in the state. Other districts also saw a gradual rise in daytime temperatures, though overall conditions remained relatively comfortable compared to the usual May heat.
Meteorologists said a cyclonic circulation currently positioned over central Pakistan and adjoining areas of Punjab and Rajasthan is influencing regional weather systems. In addition, a trough stretching from Haryana through Uttar Pradesh and Bihar up to Bangladesh is contributing to unstable atmospheric conditions.
Experts also noted that a new western disturbance is likely to become active over the Western Himalayan belt from May 10, which could significantly impact weather across Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Himachal Pradesh.
The expected shift may lead to scattered showers, lightning, and strong surface winds in several districts. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and keep track of official weather updates over the coming days.
