Bhagalpur: A portion of a key bridge over the Ganga gave way in Bhagalpur early Monday, prompting authorities to shut down traffic and launch an investigation into the incident.
Officials confirmed that a segment of the Vikramshila Setu, a 4.7-kilometre structure linking Bhagalpur with Naugachia, collapsed shortly after midnight. Despite the structural failure, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
According to District Magistrate Nawal Kishor Choudhary, the incident began around 12:50 am when a gap appeared near one of the bridge’s pillars. Within a short time, a large slab detached and fell into the river below. Authorities quickly responded after receiving alerts, ensuring that vehicles and pedestrians were cleared from the affected section.
Traffic movement has since been halted on both ends of the bridge as a precautionary measure. Commuters have been advised to use alternate routes, particularly via Munger, until further notice.
An expert panel comprising engineering specialists has been set up to determine the cause of the collapse. Officials indicated that a detailed inspection will also assess whether adjoining structures, including protective walls, have sustained damage.
The incident has drawn attention to earlier concerns regarding the bridge’s condition. In recent months, visuals circulating online had pointed to signs of wear and damage in certain sections. At the time, state authorities had acknowledged the issue and indicated that repair work would be undertaken.
With the bridge serving as a crucial link in the region, the collapse is expected to disrupt connectivity until restoration measures are completed. Further updates are likely once the technical assessment report is submitted.
