Jabalpur: The toll from the cruise boat accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur has risen to nine, with rescue teams continuing operations to trace those still missing after the vessel overturned during adverse weather conditions.

Officials confirmed that additional bodies were recovered a day after the incident, intensifying concerns over safety measures on board. State minister Rakesh Singh stated that the ongoing search operation would help determine the exact sequence of events that led to the fatalities, especially since reports suggest some passengers had life jackets.

The mishap occurred at the Bargi Dam reservoir when a sudden storm and strong winds reportedly destabilised the boat. Survivors and eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as the vessel capsized mid-water. Some passengers managed to jump off and were pulled to safety by locals and emergency responders.

However, conflicting accounts have emerged regarding safety arrangements. While officials indicated that life jackets were available, at least one survivor alleged that basic precautions were lacking, raising questions about compliance with safety norms.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav earlier confirmed that around 15 people were rescued in the immediate aftermath. He assured that the state government is extending full support to the affected families and that all possible assistance is being provided.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force and local authorities remain engaged in search operations at the site. Authorities have indicated that a detailed inquiry will be conducted once rescue efforts conclude, focusing on weather conditions, safety preparedness, and operational lapses.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to safety standards in tourist water activities, particularly during unpredictable weather conditions.
