Chandigarh: The proposed release of Lawrence of Punjab on OTT platform ZEE5 has been restrained following intervention by Punjab Police, which raised concerns over its potential impact on public order and social harmony in the state.
Punjab Police said the Special Director General of Police (Cyber Crime) took up the matter with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on April 22, seeking action under Section 69 of the Information Technology Act to stop the screening of the content.
Acting on the request, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an advisory to ZEE5 directing the platform not to release the series.
Punjab Police said the move was aimed at maintaining peace and preventing dissemination of content that could disturb the social fabric of the state.
Officials welcomed the Centre’s prompt response, describing it as a significant intervention in ensuring responsible content dissemination while safeguarding law and order.
The development comes amid growing concerns in Punjab over alleged glorification of crime and gangster culture in digital content, with authorities maintaining that such portrayals can have wider social repercussions.
