During a detailed interaction in the Netherlands, the Chief Minister discussed the broader development of hockey in Punjab and reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring the glory of India’s national game.

Focus on Strengthening Hockey Ecosystem

Bhagwant Mann praised Floris Jan Bovelander for his exceptional contribution to hockey, highlighting how his career continues to inspire young athletes across the world. He extended a formal invitation to the Olympian to visit Punjab and engage with players to enhance their skills and international exposure.

The Chief Minister said that Punjab is committed to nurturing sporting talent and creating opportunities for athletes to compete at global levels. He noted that the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy will be a landmark event, as Punjab is set to host it for the first time in history.

“This is a matter of immense pride for the state. Hosting such a prestigious tournament will significantly boost our sporting infrastructure and global recognition,” he said.

Highlighting future sporting events, Bhagwant Mann said that after the Asian Games conclude, top international teams will participate in the Champions Trophy, further enhancing Punjab’s stature in global hockey.

He also mentioned the approval of a four-nation invitational tournament, which will add momentum to Punjab’s efforts to become a major hub for international hockey events.

The Chief Minister pointed out that despite Punjab’s long-standing contribution to Indian hockey, the state had never hosted a major international tournament until now, marking this as a historic shift.

Punjab’s Rich Legacy in Indian Hockey

Reaffirming the deep connection between Punjab and hockey, Bhagwant Mann said the state has played a pivotal role in shaping Indian hockey’s success story.

“It is impossible to imagine Indian hockey without Punjabi players,” he said, noting that over 50 players from Punjab have won Olympic medals, while 10 have captained India in Olympic competitions.

He highlighted that villages such as Sansarpur, Khusropur, and Mithapur have produced more than 20 Olympians collectively, showcasing Punjab’s grassroots strength in the sport.

Recent Olympic Achievements Highlight Punjab’s Contribution

The Chief Minister also spoke about India’s recent successes on the global stage. He noted that India’s bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics ended a 41-year wait, with nine Punjabi players in the squad led by Manpreet Singh.

He further added that India continued its strong performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, securing another bronze medal with 10 Punjabi players in the team. The squad was led by Harmanpreet Singh, who also emerged as the top scorer.

Bovelander Accepts Invitation, Set to Engage with Players

Sharing details of the meeting, Bhagwant Mann said that Floris Jan Bovelander has accepted the invitation to visit Punjab and will work closely with athletes, offering guidance and motivation ahead of the upcoming Asia Hockey Championship.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister expressed his delight at meeting the Dutch legend and emphasised that such collaborations will inspire young players and help elevate Punjab’s hockey standards.

He said that the collaboration with global sports icons like Floris Jan Bovelander will play a crucial role in preparing athletes for future international competitions and strengthening Punjab’s position as a powerhouse of hockey.
