Peshawar: At least two security personnel were killed on Sunday after unidentified armed assailants opened fire in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police officials confirmed.

According to local police sources, the attack took place in the Kurram Garhi area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Cantt Police Station in Bannu district, close to the volatile North Waziristan region. The victims were members of the Federal Constabulary and were reportedly targeted while on duty.

Officials said the attackers ambushed the personnel and fled the scene after the firing. In response, the security forces stationed nearby retaliated, triggering an exchange of fire.

Following the incident, a large contingent of security forces rushed to the area and sealed off surrounding routes to prevent the suspects from escaping. A coordinated search and clearance operation has since been launched to track down those responsible.

Police further stated that reinforcements have been deployed to strengthen security in the region, which has witnessed periodic militant activity in recent years. Authorities added that the operation is ongoing, with efforts focused on locating and apprehending the attackers.

Investigations are underway to determine the identity of the assailants and establish the motive behind the attack.
