New Delhi: The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police successfully rescued a 13-year-old girl on Sunday, April 19, 2026, months after she was lured into an online friendship on Instagram. The minor had been missing from the Shahbad Dairy area in Northwest Delhi since January 22, leading to a kidnapping case being registered shortly thereafter. The rescue brings renewed focus to the significant risks associated with unsupervised social media interactions among minors and the psychological tactics used by strangers to build digital trust.

According to the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), the girl developed a relationship with a boy via Instagram who eventually travelled to Delhi to take her to Sikar, Rajasthan. Following a series of raids across Rajasthan and the utilization of technical surveillance, police teams eventually traced the girl to the ISBT Sarai Kale Khan area in Delhi. She has since been reunited with her family, while the police continue to investigate the legal implications for the boy involved in the elopement.

In response to the case, the Delhi Police issued a public advisory urging parents to maintain open dialogues with their children regarding digital safety. Officials warned that minors are increasingly vulnerable to online grooming, where strangers use digital conversations to bypass traditional safety instincts. Parents have been advised to monitor online activities closely, while young users are cautioned against sharing personal details or meeting individuals encountered on social media platforms without explicit parental consent and presence.
