Patna: In a momentous shift for Bihar’s political landscape, Nitish Kumar officially recommended the dissolution of his Cabinet on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The move serves as the final constitutional step before submitting his formal resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain. Kumar, the state’s longest-serving Chief Minister, is stepping down to transition into a new role in the Rajya Sabha, paving the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to lead the state government for the first time in Bihar’s history.

The transition occurred on the 135th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, adding symbolic weight to the political realignment. During an emotional final Cabinet meeting at the Old Secretariat, Kumar informed his colleagues of the decision to dissolve the council of ministers. State Minister Ram Kripal Yadav noted that the atmosphere was somber as the veteran leader prepared to exit the Chief Minister’s office at 1 Anne Marg. Kumar is expected to meet the Governor at Raj Bhavan around 3:00 PM today to conclude the formalities.

The BJP, currently the single largest party in the 243-member Assembly with 89 MLAs, has convened a legislature party meeting for this afternoon to elect its new leader. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has arrived in Patna as the central observer to oversee the process. While Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary is considered a top contender for the Chief Minister’s post, names like Union Minister Nityanand Rai and Shreyasi Singh are also in circulation. The new NDA government, which maintains a strong majority with support from the JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), and HAM, is expected to be sworn in on Wednesday morning.
