Chandigarh: Arhtiyas (commission agents) across Punjab on Tuesday called off their nearly week-long strike after reaching a consensus with government representatives following a crucial meeting.
The decision came after detailed discussions between arhtiya leaders and officials, during which key demands related to commission and administrative issues were addressed. Following assurances from the government, the agents announced the immediate resumption of work in mandis.
With the strike withdrawn, wheat procurement and lifting operations—disrupted for several days—are now expected to resume smoothly. The move comes as a major relief for farmers who had been facing challenges due to unseasonal rains and hailstorms, which had already impacted harvesting and crop quality.
The resumption of mandi activities will facilitate timely weighing and sale of produce, helping prevent further losses to farmers during the peak procurement season.
The strike had stalled operations across grain markets in the state, prompting the government to intervene and hold talks to resolve the issue at the earliest.
Officials expressed optimism that normalcy will return quickly, ensuring smooth procurement and supply chain operations in the coming days.
