Chandigarh: Bhagwant Mann announced that the Punjab government will convene a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on April 13, coinciding with Vaisakhi, to introduce a new law aimed at preventing incidents of Beadbi (sacrilege).

Addressing the media, the Chief Minister clarified that the proposed legislation will be enacted as a state law and will not require approval from the President after being passed by the Assembly. He stated that the law will come into immediate effect within Punjab once it is approved.

Mann also referred to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, noting that while it is a religious institution, the government would welcome any suggestions it may offer to further strengthen the proposed anti-sacrilege legislation.

Reaffirming his position, the Chief Minister said that any act that disturbs peace and communal harmony in the state will not be tolerated. He added that the new law will ensure strict punishment for those found guilty of sacrilege.

The move comes amid ongoing concerns over incidents of religious desecration in Punjab, with the government aiming to introduce stronger legal safeguards to maintain public order and harmony.
