Chandigarh: Residents of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali have been advised to prepare for turbulent weather conditions early next week, with the India Meteorological Department issuing an orange alert for April 7 and 8.

The warning comes in view of an active western disturbance expected to intensify over the region, bringing thunderstorms, lightning and the possibility of hailstorms. Officials said wind speeds could reach 40–60 kmph during the peak period, posing risks of damage to property, trees and power lines.

While the next couple of days are likely to see relatively mild activity, including light rain and cloudy skies, the system is forecast to strengthen by Tuesday and Wednesday, leading to more widespread and intense weather events.

The Tricity has already begun experiencing early signs of the disturbance. Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 30.8°C, slightly below normal, while the minimum settled at 17.2°C. Similar conditions were observed in Mohali and Panchkula, accompanied by a sharp rise in humidity levels, indicating increasing moisture in the atmosphere.

Meteorological officials said the region may continue to witness intermittent showers through Sunday, but the main impact of the weather system is expected early next week, when isolated hailstorms could also occur.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious during adverse conditions, limit outdoor movement during thunderstorms and take necessary safety measures to avoid potential hazards caused by strong winds and lightning.
