Chandigarh, April 2, 2026: In a major example of the impact of Punjab’s healthcare system, a life-saving surgery worth ₹4 lakh was successfully carried out cashless under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna.
The beneficiary, Sukhpal Kaur, a 37-year-old resident of Chandigarh, was admitted to PGIMER after being diagnosed with a serious heart condition known as aortic dissection. The condition required immediate surgery and specialised treatment.
Cashless Treatment Saved Time and Life
The total cost of the surgery, hospitalisation, and care was estimated at around ₹4 lakh, which would have been very difficult for the family to arrange on short notice.
However, once the Sehat Card was verified at the hospital, treatment started without any delay. The entire procedure was done cashless under the scheme, which provides coverage of up to ₹10 lakh per family.
A family member said that everything happened very quickly and arranging such a large amount immediately would not have been possible.
“The Sehat Card ensured that treatment started without delay, which was very important in such a serious condition,” the family member said.
Doctors Stress Importance of Timely Treatment
Dr. Sachin Mahajan from PGIMER Chandigarh explained that aortic dissection is a critical condition that needs urgent surgery.
“In such cases, even a small delay can increase the risk. Under the Sehat Yojna, once the card is verified, we can start treatment immediately without waiting for financial approvals,” he said.
This helps ensure that patients receive timely and uninterrupted care, especially in high-risk heart cases.
Government Highlights Healthcare Impact
Punjab’s Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said that saving lives in such critical situations brings great satisfaction.
He said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna is making a real difference on the ground.
“Families are able to get immediate treatment without worrying about arranging money. This shows the real impact of the scheme,” he said.
Scheme Expanding Across Punjab
The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna is already benefiting lakhs of families across Punjab, with many high-cost treatments being provided free of cost.
The Punjab Government is encouraging people to enrol for the Sehat Card at designated centres so they can avail cashless treatment benefits under the scheme.
Officials said the scheme is playing a key role in improving healthcare access and reducing financial burden on families across the state.
