Amarkot/Tarn Taran (Punjab): Panic spread across Amarkot town in Tarn Taran district after unidentified gunmen opened fire at a medical store in broad daylight, seriously injuring a doctor’s son and sparking protests against the police administration.

According to initial reports, the attackers targeted a local medical shop and fired multiple rounds. Sunil, son of a local doctor, sustained critical bullet injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Bhikhiwind, where he remains under treatment.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants fired around four shots before fleeing the scene, creating chaos in the busy market area and triggering fear among residents and shopkeepers.

Preliminary information indicates that the family had allegedly been receiving extortion threats for several months. A relative of the victim was reportedly targeted with repeated ransom calls, raising serious concerns over prior warnings and the preparedness of local authorities.

The incident has also revived traumatic memories within the family, recalling past violence in the region that had earlier affected their relatives.

Soon after the firing, protests erupted near the Amarkot railway station and surrounding markets, with locals questioning the police over alleged lapses in security despite prior threat inputs. Demonstrators demanded immediate action against those responsible and stronger measures to ensure public safety.

Police officials have launched an investigation into the incident, while tension continues to prevail in the area. Authorities have assured that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the accused.
