Qinghai, China: At least 12 workers died and four others remain missing after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed over the Yellow River in northwest China’s Qinghai province, according to state media reports on Friday.

The incident occurred around 3 am when a steel cable snapped during a tensioning operation, sending a large section of the aquamarine-arched structure crashing into the river below. Aerial images released by Xinhua showed a bent portion of the bridge deck hanging down into the waters.

Sixteen workers were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Rescue teams deployed boats, a helicopter, and robots to search for the missing.

The bridge, spanning 1.6 kilometres with its deck rising 55 metres above the river, was part of a major railway project in the region, the China Daily reported.
