India to Deregulate Domestic Airfares; Temporary Caps Withdrawn from March 23

New Delhi: The Ministry of Civil Aviation announced that it will withdraw the temporary fare caps on domestic flights starting Monday, March 23. The decision marks the end of a price-control regime implemented in December 2025 to curb “abnormal surges” in ticket prices caused by large-scale operational disruptions at IndiGo. Government officials stated that the domestic aviation sector has now stabilized, with seat capacity and flight operations returning to normal levels across all carriers.

In an official order, the Ministry noted that the restrictions—originally designed to safeguard passenger interests during a period of constrained capacity—are no longer required in the current operating environment. By removing these caps, the government is allowing airlines to once again determine ticket prices based on market demand and supply dynamics. However, the Ministry issued a stern warning to airlines to “exercise pricing discipline” and ensure that fares remain “reasonable and transparent.”

Despite the deregulation, the government will continue to monitor airfare trends on a real-time basis. The Ministry emphasized that any “excessive or unjustified” surge in fares, particularly during peak demand periods or future exigencies, will be viewed seriously. The order explicitly mentions that the government reserves the right to re-introduce fare controls or take other regulatory interventions if deemed necessary in the public interest.

This move is expected to bring more competitive pricing to the Indian skies as the summer travel season approaches. Industry experts suggest that while the withdrawal of caps gives airlines more flexibility, the threat of renewed government intervention will likely prevent immediate, drastic price hikes. The monitoring mechanism remains a critical safeguard for passengers navigating one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
