Washington, D.C.: Unidentified drones flying over a sensitive US military installation have triggered fresh security concerns in the American capital, especially as tensions escalate amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
According to reports, multiple drone sightings were recorded over Fort Lesley J. McNair — a strategically important Army base located just a few kilometres from the White House and Capitol Hill. The facility is known for housing top military institutions and senior officials, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Sources indicated that several drones were detected during a single night in recent days, prompting an immediate review of security protocols. The sightings reportedly led to high-level discussions within the administration, including a meeting at the White House to assess potential risks and response strategies.
Officials have not yet identified the origin or intent of the drones, but the incident has raised concerns given the base’s proximity to critical government institutions. Unlike some other military facilities in the region, Fort McNair is believed to have comparatively limited buffer zones, making it more vulnerable to aerial intrusions.
In the wake of the incident, there were internal deliberations about relocating senior officials residing at the base after their accommodation details became publicly known last year. However, no relocation has taken place so far.
