Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to assume control of 215 schools previously run by the proscribed Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its affiliate, Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT). The move aims to ensure that the academic careers of students enrolled in these institutions are not disrupted.

According to an official order issued by the School Education Department, the responsibility for managing these schools will now rest with the respective district magistrates. They have been instructed to constitute new management committees to oversee the institutionsโ€™ functioning.

The decision comes in the wake of the Union Ministry of Home Affairsโ€™ notification, which had declared Jamaat-e-Islami an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on February 28, 2019, a ban that was subsequently extended on February 27, 2024.

Officials said the takeover will streamline the administration of these schools and bring them under proper regulatory oversight. Authorities emphasized that safeguarding the education and well-being of the students remains the top priority while restructuring the institutionsโ€™ management.
