Delhi Issues Traffic Curbs Near Major Temples as Navratri Rush Looms

Delhi: With the festive season of Navratri approaching, the Delhi Traffic Police has rolled out a comprehensive plan to manage the expected surge of devotees around two of the capital’s key religious sites—Kalkaji Temple and Jhandewalan Mata Mandir.

Officials announced on Wednesday that special traffic measures will be enforced in phases to ease congestion and maintain safety. Restrictions around Kalkaji will begin immediately and remain in place until March 27, while similar arrangements near Jhandewalan will come into effect from Thursday.

Authorities anticipate significant crowd movement, particularly in South Delhi. Several stretches near Kalkaji Temple are likely to witness heavy traffic, including parts of the Outer Ring Road, Ma Anandmai Marg, and connecting routes such as Captain Gaur Marg and Aastha Kunj Road. Commuters have been urged to steer clear of these areas during peak hours to avoid delays.

To further streamline traffic flow, heavy goods vehicles will not be allowed on select roads during designated hours. Parking restrictions will also be strictly enforced, especially along busy corridors between Nehru Place and Modi Mill Flyover. Officials warned that vehicles parked outside authorised zones could face penalties.

Pedestrian safety has also been highlighted as a priority. Devotees visiting the temples have been advised to use foot overbridges instead of crossing busy roads directly. Walking within designated pathways has been recommended to reduce the risk of accidents amid dense crowds.

In Central Delhi, areas surrounding Jhandewalan Mata Mandir—including Rani Jhansi Road and Desh Bandhu Gupta Road—are expected to experience bottlenecks. Motorists travelling towards Karol Bagh or the central district have been encouraged to take alternative routes such as Faiz Road and Panchkuian Road.

The traffic police have appealed to the public to rely on public transport wherever possible and to cooperate with on-ground personnel to ensure a smooth and safe festive experience for all.
