Rapper Badshah in Legal Trouble Over ‘Bawla’ Song Payment Dispute

Karnal, Haryana: Popular rapper and singer Badshah has landed in a legal dispute regarding his chartbuster track ‘Bawla’. A Karnal-based company, Unisys Infosolutions Pvt. Ltd., has accused him of failing to clear dues amounting to Rs 2.88 crore despite the successful production and release of the song.

According to the company, Badshah entered into an agreement with them on June 30, 2021, for production and promotional work related to the track. The deal required him to pay Rs 1.05 crore for promotions and Rs 65 lakh for the music video. The song was later released on July 28, 2021, across YouTube and other platforms.

Company Says Bills Unpaid

Unisys claimed it completed all contractual work on time and raised two invoices in May 2022—one worth Rs 76.70 lakh (including GST) and another of Rs 1.83 crore. Despite repeated reminders and legal notices in 2023 and 2024, the company alleges no payment was made.

Court Proceedings in Karnal

Taking the matter to court, Unisys requested that Badshah’s assets and funds be secured until arbitration begins. The Commercial Court of Karnal, hearing the case, directed Badshah to submit details of his assets. On May 7, 2024, he presented an FDR (Fixed Deposit Receipt) of Rs 1.70 crore, which the court immediately froze.

Most recently, on August 16, 2024, Judge Jasbir Singh Kundu ordered Badshah to deposit an additional Rs 50 lakh into another FDR within 60 days. Both deposits will remain under court supervision, and Badshah cannot encash them without prior approval.

What Next?

If the rapper fails to comply with the court’s directive, he could face further legal action. Meanwhile, representatives from both sides—Advocates Amit and S.L. Nirwania for the company, and Advocate Vijendra Parmar for Badshah—continue to contest the matter in court.

The dispute has once again highlighted the rising number of contractual disagreements in India’s booming music and entertainment industry.
