Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has initiated action against Giani Raghbir Singh, the Head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib, directing him to present evidence within 72 hours to substantiate allegations he recently levelled against the committee.

The decision was taken during an interim committee meeting of the SGPC chaired by its president, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, where key Sikh issues were discussed. The move is reportedly linked to statements made by Giani Raghbir Singh in recent days.

Apologise or Face Defamation Action

Addressing the media, Dhami said the action pertains to two serious matters concerning Bhatha Sahib and Gurdwara Amb Sahib. He asserted that the allegations made by Giani Raghbir Singh in these cases are baseless and that all records related to Bhatha Sahib are in order.

He warned that Singh must either apologise for the allegations or be prepared to face defamation proceedings. The SGPC has authorised the manager of Gurdwara Amb Sahib to initiate a defamation suit if an apology is not issued, citing attempts to mislead the Sikh community.

Notice Over Damage to SGPC’s Image

Dhami further stated that as the Head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib, Singh had made accusations without presenting solid evidence, thereby harming the reputation of the SGPC. He has been formally served a 72-hour notice to submit proof in support of his claims. Failing this, appropriate disciplinary action will follow.

Criticism of Centre Over Sikh Prisoners’ Release

During the meeting, the SGPC president also criticised the central government over what he termed a “dual policy” regarding the release of Sikh prisoners, including Prof. Davinder Singh Bhullar and Balwant Singh Rajoana.

Dhami alleged that despite a change in government in Delhi, there has been no progress on pending release petitions, citing the rejection of Prof. Bhullar’s plea as evidence.

The developments mark a significant escalation in tensions within Sikh religious and institutional circles.
