Vadodara: A 21-year-old engineering student was found dead in his hostel room at a private university in Gujarat’s Vadodara district on Thursday morning, police said.

The deceased, identified as Meet Jagdish Patel, was a fourth-year B.Tech student and a native of Mumbai. He was residing at Tagore Bhawan boys’ hostel on the campus of Parul University.

According to officials, Patel returned to his room on Wednesday night but did not step out the following morning. When he failed to respond to repeated knocks, the hostel warden looked through a window and saw him hanging from the ceiling fan.

Sub-inspector D R Desai said the room was locked from the inside and the student had allegedly used a bedsheet in the incident. No suicide note was recovered from the spot. Patel’s mobile phone has been sent for forensic examination as part of the investigation.

Police have registered an accidental death report and are probing the circumstances that may have led to the incident.
