Bharat Bandh Disrupts Transport and Services in Several States; Mixed Impact Across India

Delhi: A countrywide general strike called by a joint platform of trade unions and farmer groups on Thursday led to widespread disruptions in several states, with transport services, government offices and markets affected in varying degrees. The Bharat Bandh, backed by fourteen national trade unions along with agricultural and rural worker organisations, is being held in protest against what organisers describe as anti-labour and anti-farmer policies of the central government.

Where the Impact Is Strongest

Kerala witnessed one of the most visible effects of the shutdown. Public transport services were suspended across the state, with both the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) unions and private bus operators supporting the strike. Government offices reported thin attendance, and the state administration declared that unauthorised absence by employees would be treated as “dies-non,” meaning no salary for the day.

In Odisha, trade unions including the All India United Trade Union Center and the Trade Union Coordination Centre joined the strike. Demonstrations were held in Bhubaneswar and other districts. While essential services continued, transport and market activities were partially disrupted in several areas.

Punjab also saw participation from transport workers in districts such as Moga, affecting bus services in parts of the state. Commuters reported delays and cancellations on some routes.

In West Bengal, unions organised protests against the new labour codes and other proposed legislation. While services were not completely halted statewide, demonstrations and rallies were reported in Kolkata and surrounding areas.

What Is Open and What Is Closed

  • Public Transport: Bus services have been suspended or curtailed in Kerala and affected in parts of Punjab and Odisha. Disruptions are also reported in select urban centres elsewhere due to demonstrations and road blockades.
  • Banks and Government Offices: Participation by employee unions has led to reduced attendance in certain government departments. Banking services may experience delays in some regions.
  • Markets and Shops: Local markets and small businesses are closed in areas where the strike has strong backing, particularly in Kerala and parts of eastern India.
  • Airports and Railways: Flight operations are continuing as scheduled, though passengers are being advised to leave early due to possible traffic congestion. Rail services are largely operational, but delays may occur where protests block tracks or roads.
  • Schools and Colleges: No nationwide holiday has been declared. Karnataka’s School Education Department clarified that educational institutions would function normally, though district authorities may take decisions depending on local conditions. In contrast, schools and colleges in Kerala and parts of Odisha and West Bengal are likely to remain closed due to strong support for the bandh.

Political Reactions

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi voiced support for the strike, stating that workers and farmers are mobilising to safeguard their rights. He raised concerns over the four labour codes, certain trade agreements and what he described as the weakening of welfare schemes such as MGNREGA.

On the other hand, Odisha BJP spokesperson Anil Biswal criticised the opposition, accusing it of politicising labour issues. He argued that reforms aimed at restructuring labour and economic policies are being resisted for political reasons rather than worker welfare.

Key Demands Behind the Strike

Organisers have called for the repeal of the four labour codes and have objected to proposed measures such as the Electricity Bill 2025, the Seeds Bill 2025 and legislation concerning livestock and animal husbandry. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha has appealed to farmers nationwide to join the movement, with organisers claiming participation from millions of workers and cultivators.

Advisory for Citizens

Authorities have advised commuters to anticipate possible “chakka jams” or road blockades in certain areas. Travellers are encouraged to plan journeys in advance and check local updates before leaving home.

While the impact varies from state to state, the strike has brought normal life to a standstill in some regions and caused partial disruptions in others, highlighting the scale of mobilisation behind the protest.
