New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday directed Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh to examine a notice submitted by opposition parties seeking to move a resolution for his removal from office, sources said.

Around 120 opposition Members of Parliament submitted the notice, accusing the Speaker of not allowing Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders to speak during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address. The notice also cites the suspension of eight MPs as part of the grounds for seeking his removal.

According to sources, Birla has asked the Lok Sabha secretariat to scrutinise the notice and process it in accordance with parliamentary rules and procedures.

The notice was submitted to the secretariat by Congress MP and Chief Whip K Suresh on behalf of several opposition parties, including the Congress, Samajwadi Party and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

However, Members of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) did not sign the notice, sources confirmed.

The development comes amid heightened political tension in Parliament, with the opposition alleging suppression of its voice in the House, while the government maintains that proceedings are being conducted as per established rules.
