New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the implementation of an On-Screen Marking (OSM) system for the evaluation of Class 12 answer sheets starting with the 2026 board examinations, which commence on February 17.

In a circular issued to principals of all CBSE-affiliated schools, the board said the digital evaluation system aims to improve efficiency, transparency and accuracy in the assessment process. Under the new framework, Class 12 answer books will be assessed online, while Class 10 answer sheets will continue to be evaluated in physical form for the 2026 examination cycle.

CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said the OSM system would eliminate errors in totalling, minimise manual intervention through automated processes, and significantly speed up evaluation. He added that teachers would be able to carry out assessments from their own schools, leading to reduced travel time and lower logistical costs.

The board noted that the new system would also remove the need for post-result verification of marks, thereby reducing manpower requirements. Teachers from all CBSE-affiliated schools, including those located overseas, will be eligible to participate in the evaluation process. Bhardwaj described the initiative as a sustainable digital reform aligned with environmental goals.

To ensure a smooth rollout, CBSE has instructed schools to make necessary arrangements, including computer labs equipped with public static IPs, systems running Windows 8 or above with a minimum of 4 GB RAM, updated web browsers, Adobe Reader, stable internet connectivity of at least 2 Mbps, and uninterrupted power supply.

The board will provide support through training sessions, trial runs, instructional videos and a dedicated helpline for technical assistance. Teachers registered on the Online Affiliated School Information System (OASIS) will be granted access to familiarise themselves with the new platform.

CBSE conducts Class 10 and Class 12 examinations annually across India and in 26 other countries, catering to approximately 46 lakh students.
