Delhi: Delhi’s push towards cleaner mobility received a fresh boost on Sunday with the addition of 500 electric buses to the city’s public transport system. With the new induction, the Delhi Transport Corporation’s electric bus strength has risen to 4,000, marking a significant step in the capital’s transition to sustainable transport.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off the new fleet at a ceremony attended by senior leaders, including BJP president Nitin Nabin. Addressing the gathering, Gupta said the expanded electric bus network would improve daily commuting while also contributing to the city’s fight against rising pollution levels.

She noted that strengthening eco-friendly public transport remains a key priority for the government, especially as Delhi grapples with traffic congestion and poor air quality. “Increasing the number of electric buses will make travel more accessible and help reduce harmful emissions,” she said.

The Chief Minister also outlined ambitious future plans for the transport sector, stating that the total DTC bus fleet is targeted to reach 14,000 by 2028. The expansion is expected to enhance route coverage, reduce waiting times for commuters and further lower the carbon footprint of the capital’s transport system.

Officials said the newly added buses will be deployed across major routes in phases, supporting Delhi’s long-term goal of becoming a leader in green urban mobility.
