Los Angeles: The 14th Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has won his first Grammy Award at the 68th annual Grammy Awards, receiving the honour for Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording. The award was announced during the Grammy Premiere Ceremony held in Los Angeles and streamed worldwide.
The winning project, Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, features spoken reflections by the 90-year-old leader on mindfulness, compassion, peace and environmental responsibility, interwoven with carefully curated musical compositions. The album stood out in a competitive category that included prominent figures from diverse fields, drawing attention for its spiritual depth and cross-cultural collaboration.
Singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright accepted the award on behalf of the Dalai Lama, adding a light moment to the ceremony while acknowledging the global nature of the project. The recognition was widely welcomed by spiritual leaders, artists and listeners who viewed it as an affirmation of universal human values. However, the award also drew criticism from China, which described the honour as inappropriate and politically driven, reflecting long-standing tensions surrounding the Dalai Lama’s global presence.
The Grammy Awards were held on February 1, 2026, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The Dalai Lama’s album was among the early winners announced before the main televised event, making its victory one of the most talked-about moments of the evening. Born Tenzin Gyatso, the Dalai Lama became Tibet’s spiritual leader in his early childhood. He has lived in exile in India since 1959, after fleeing Tibet in the aftermath of a Chinese military crackdown on an uprising. From his base in Dharamsala, he has consistently advocated non-violence, interfaith harmony and environmental awareness, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
The Grammy win follows the album’s nomination in late 2025 and marks a significant cultural milestone, highlighting the Dalai Lama’s engagement with contemporary artistic platforms.
