Chandigarh — The Chandigarh Administration on Sunday opened the flood gates of Sukhna Lake after heavy rainfall in the hills pushed water levels close to the danger mark.
Officials said the lake touched 1162.5 feet against the danger mark of 1164 feet, prompting the release of excess water. Six inches of the gates have already been opened, with further gradual openings planned to avoid sudden surges downstream.
Alerts have been issued in nearby areas, including Baltana and Mubarakpur Causeway, warning residents of possible increases in water flow. Special teams are monitoring the situation to ensure public safety.
This is the fourth time this season that the flood gates have been opened due to rising water levels. Authorities stressed that precautionary alerts were issued in advance to minimize risks and prevent loss of life or property.
