New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested a man who allegedly posed as an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer to deceive people in east Delhi and had been absconding after being declared a proclaimed offender in an earlier case, officials said on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Vimal Bhat, also known as Sonu, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. He was apprehended from the Patparganj Industrial Area on January 29 following sustained efforts by the police to trace his whereabouts.

According to investigators, the case dates back to 2017, when Bhat allegedly impersonated a senior IPS officer posted with the Intelligence Bureau. He reportedly used a forged identity card to project himself as a high-ranking official and mislead members of the public.

Police said the accused would travel in a vehicle fitted with “POLICE” stickers, a siren and a loud hailer to create an appearance of official authority and instil fear. During searches conducted in connection with the case, officers recovered a fake IB identity card, a walkie-talkie, police-style accessories, a siren, a loud hailer and another identity card purportedly issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Several documents bearing forged government credentials were also seized.

Based on these recoveries, offences related to cheating, forgery and the use of forged documents were added to the case. Bhat was declared a proclaimed offender on August 4, 2025, during trial proceedings in a case registered at Dwarka South police station.

Further verification by the police revealed that the accused is allegedly involved in multiple other cases. These include a case under the Negotiable Instruments Act in Udhampur, a 2020 case registered under sections 279 and 304 of the Indian Penal Code in Nawabad, and another case from 2018 in Naraina involving serious charges under sections 420, 419, 376, 493 and 377 of the IPC.

Police said further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the full extent of his activities and possible involvement in other offences.
