Muktsar: In a significant move as part of Punjab’s ongoing offensive against organised crime, police in Muktsar district have arrested the parents of Canada-based gangster Satinderjit Singh, popularly known as Goldy Brar. The arrests were made on Monday in connection with an extortion case that dates back to 2024.

According to police officials, the action followed an investigation into an extortion complaint filed by a resident of Udekaran village in Muktsar. Acting on leads developed during the probe, a team from Sadar Muktsar police station apprehended Goldy Brar’s father and mother from Amritsar.

Sub-Inspector Darshan Singh, who heads the Sadar Muktsar police station, said the couple has been named in the extortion case and was taken into custody after preliminary verification of evidence gathered by the investigators. Further questioning is underway to determine the extent of their alleged role.

The accused, Shamsher Singh and Preetpal Kaur, are currently residing in Adesh Nagar on Kotkapura Road in Muktsar, though the family originally hails from Faridkot district. Shamsher Singh had earlier served in the Punjab Police as an Assistant Sub-Inspector but was compulsorily retired in 2021 after his name surfaced during investigations into a murder case in Muktsar.

Goldy Brar himself remains a high-profile fugitive. Declared an absconder, he is among the main accused in the 2022 killing of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh, widely known as Sidhu Moosewala, in Mansa district. Security agencies believe Brar has been operating from abroad for several years.

A notice issued by national investigative agencies in 2024 suggested that Brar may be residing either in Canada or the United States. He is believed to have travelled to Canada in 2017 on a student visa and later became deeply involved in organised crime. Though he was once linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, reports indicate that he severed ties with the group last year.

Adding to his legal troubles, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs last year designated Goldy Brar as an “individual terrorist” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, citing his alleged involvement in terror-linked criminal activities.

Punjab Police officials say the arrest of Brar’s parents is part of a broader strategy to dismantle the support systems and financial networks that enable gangsters to operate from overseas, signalling that those connected to organised crime will also face the law.
