New Delhi: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will pay a two-day visit to India starting Monday, August 18, for boundary talks with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Saturday.

The visit comes just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned trip to China for the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

According to the MEA statement, Wang, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, will participate in the 24th round of the Special Representatives’ (SR) dialogue on the India-China boundary issue with Doval.

“During his visit, Wang Yi will hold the 24th round of SR talks on the boundary question with India’s SR, NSA Ajit Doval,” the MEA said. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is also scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with his Chinese counterpart.

Doval last visited China in December 2024 for SR talks with Wang, following a decision by Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at their Kazan meeting to revive suspended dialogue mechanisms.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to travel to Tianjin, China, on August 31–September 1 to attend the SCO summit after completing a scheduled visit to Japan around August 29.

The latest diplomatic exchanges are taking place amid cautious efforts by both nations to mend relations strained by the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes and the prolonged military standoff in eastern Ladakh. The disengagement process was completed in October 2024 after agreements on the last two friction points—Depsang and Demchok.

Since then, both sides have taken steps to rebuild trust, including resuming the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, reinstating tourist visas for Chinese nationals, and discussing the resumption of direct flights. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Jaishankar have also visited China in recent months for SCO-related meetings.

China currently holds the chairmanship of the SCO.
