Air India Suspends New York and Newark Services Amid Powerful Winter Storm in the US

New Delhi: Air India on Saturday announced the cancellation of all its flights operating to and from New York and Newark, New Jersey, for Sunday and Monday, citing severe weather conditions forecast across the region due to a major winter storm.

According to the airline, the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers and crew, with meteorological agencies warning of heavy snowfall, icy conditions and strong winds in the northeastern United States. The storm, named Winter Storm Fern, is expected to significantly disrupt air travel across large parts of the country.

The intense weather system has already triggered widespread flight cancellations and delays at major airports, as airlines brace for hazardous runway conditions and reduced visibility. Several carriers have also issued travel advisories and flexible rebooking options for affected passengers.

Aviation authorities in the US have warned that the storm could severely impact operations at major hubs in the South, East and central regions, with snowfall and freezing rain posing challenges for both take-offs and landings. Ground operations are also expected to be slowed by ice accumulation and high winds.

Air India has advised travellers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport and to make use of the airline’s rebooking and refund facilities. Passengers impacted by the cancellations are being offered assistance through customer support channels and the airline’s official website.

The carrier said it is closely monitoring the evolving weather situation and will resume services once conditions improve and operational safety can be ensured.
