Fatehgarh Sahib: Police officials have confirmed that a powerful explosion occurred on a railway track in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district, even as they remain tight-lipped about how the blast took place. Authorities have begun a detailed investigation into the incident from multiple angles.
The explosion occurred around 11 pm on Friday, nearly 48 hours before Republic Day, when a freight train was passing through a newly constructed railway line in the Sarhind area. The blast severely damaged the engine of the goods train, while the driver sustained injuries in the incident. Sources described the explosion as extremely dangerous and indicated that the possible use of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) is being suspected.
According to officials, the blast took place near the Khanpur railway crossing as the engine of the freight train reached the spot. The intensity of the explosion was so strong that nearly three to four feet of the railway track was completely blown away. Railway tracks and sleepers were shattered into pieces due to the impact.
The injured engine driver was rushed to a hospital for primary treatment. Following the explosion, panic spread in the area and railway officials were immediately informed. A railway team reached the site during the night itself and carried out repair work on the damaged track.
Police said investigations are ongoing, but no further details are being shared at this stage.
