Chandigarh: Punjabi singer Singga has once again landed in the middle of a storm after an old interview resurfaced on social media and his latest song drew sharp criticism for its language and visuals. The controversy gained momentum after a year-old video clip of the artist making derogatory comments about fellow musicians began circulating widely online.
In the resurfaced interview, Singga is seen making sweeping remarks about the music industry, using offensive terms to describe several artists, though he did not name anyone specifically. The clip, which was recently shared by an Instagram page, has triggered outrage for its insensitive and demeaning tone. In the video, Singga suggests that masculinity has disappeared from the industry, comments that many viewers have labelled as derogatory and inappropriate.
Adding to the backlash, Singga’s newly released track, Asla 2.0, has also come under fire. The song, uploaded on his official YouTube channel on January 23, prominently features firearms and aggressive imagery. Several sections of the track contain explicit language and provocative lyrics, which critics say promote violence, glorify gun culture, and include disrespectful references to women.
The music video shows repeated visuals of weapons, staged firing sequences, and stylised scenes involving the sharing of firearms, prompting concerns about the impact such portrayals may have on young audiences. Social media users and civil society groups have questioned the responsibility of artists in shaping public attitudes, especially in a region where authorities have been attempting to curb the influence of gun culture in popular music.
This is not the first time Singga has found himself in trouble. In November 2022, an FIR was registered against him at the Mataur police station in Mohali over allegations of promoting firearms and hurting religious sentiments through his earlier song Teri Ammi. That track was accused of containing obscene expressions and derogatory remarks targeting women, leading to protests by several organisations, including the Bhim Army, and subsequent police action.
With both his past remarks and latest musical release drawing intense scrutiny, Singga is once again at the centre of a debate around accountability, artistic expression, and the social impact of controversial content in the Punjabi entertainment industry.
