CBSE Makes APAAR ID Mandatory for Classes 9 to 12 Under ‘One Nation, One Student ID’ Initiative

New Delhi – The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that students from Classes 9 to 12 will now be required to obtain an APAAR ID, a move aimed at boosting transparency and digitisation in education.

APAAR ID, or Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry, is a unique 12-digit identification number that will digitally store school records, marksheets, certificates, and other academic documents for each student. Valid for a lifetime, the ID will ensure safe and accessible academic records, prevent duplication, and curb the use of fake documents.

According to CBSE, the initiative is in line with the New Education Policy (NEP) and the Digital India vision. It will also integrate with platforms like DigiLocker and the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), providing seamless access to verified records.

Starting 2026, schools must ensure that students’ APAAR IDs are generated before registration on the UDISE+ portal. The ID will be mandatory for admission in Classes 9 and 11, as well as for appearing in Class 10 and 12 board examinations.

CBSE officials said the system would speed up the digital transformation of education while making student records secure, accurate, and transparent.
