Shimla: Large parts of Himachal Pradesh experienced the first significant snowfall of the winter on Friday, breaking a dry spell that had stretched on for nearly three months. The change in weather brought fresh snow to several mountain regions that had so far remained snowless this season.

Although upper reaches of Lahaul and Spiti and parts of Chamba had seen early snowfall, much of the state’s hill districts were awaiting their first major spell. On Friday, snowfall was reported not only from higher altitudes in Shimla and Kinnaur but also in the state capital itself, marking a notable shift in weather conditions.

Several areas in Shimla district, including Chopal, Rampur, Narkanda, Khadapathar and Kufri, witnessed steady snowfall from the morning hours. In places such as Deha and Chopal, heavy accumulation led to the temporary closure of roads, affecting vehicular movement. Power supply was also disrupted in some localities due to snow-laden lines and adverse weather.

The Meteorological Department had earlier issued an orange alert for January 22 and 23, warning of widespread rain and snowfall across the state. Officials said the precipitation is likely to continue through the day, with cold conditions expected to persist.

The fresh spell of snow and rain has been welcomed by farmers and orchard owners, who were facing difficulties due to unusually dry weather over the past few months. The snowfall is also expected to boost tourism in the hill state, as winter destinations draw visitors seeking snow-covered landscapes.
