Delhi: A bout of unexpected rain disrupted the full-dress rehearsal for the Republic Day parade in New Delhi on Friday, as cloudy skies and falling temperatures added an extra bite to the winter morning.

Several parts of the capital received light to moderate rainfall in the early hours, bringing down temperatures and making conditions noticeably colder than previous days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the shift in weather was linked to an active western disturbance affecting the region. Officials warned that overcast conditions are likely to continue, with the possibility of thunderstorms and further light showers later in the day. A yellow alert has been issued for Delhi and nearby areas to caution residents about changing weather conditions.

Despite the drizzle and cold winds, preparations for the January 26 celebrations remained on track. The rehearsal was conducted as planned along Kartavya Path, with marching contingents, performers and security forces carrying out their roles without interruption. Spectators who gathered to watch the proceedings came prepared, many wrapped in shawls or raincoats, while some resorted to plastic covers to stay dry as intermittent rain persisted.

The full-dress rehearsal follows the exact route and format of the main Republic Day parade, serving as a final run-through ahead of the national event. This year’s parade will feature 30 tableaux, representing the cultural diversity and achievements of the country. Of these, 17 will be presented by States and Union Territories, while the remaining 13 will be showcased by various Ministries, Departments and Services.

While the weather posed a challenge, the determination of participants ensured that preparations continued smoothly, reflecting the spirit behind the annual celebration.
