Chandigarh: A spell of rain accompanied by gusty winds has altered weather conditions across Punjab and the Chandigarh region, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures and intensifying the winter chill. Drizzle that began late Thursday night continued into Friday morning, leading to colder and damp conditions in many districts.

The rainfall has caused a sharp fall in mercury levels, with Hoshiarpur recording the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 3.2 degrees Celsius. Several other areas also experienced a marked cooling effect as cloud cover and persistent showers limited daytime warming.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted unsettled weather throughout Friday, warning that intermittent rainfall is likely to continue. According to the forecast, the probability of precipitation remains high at around 78 per cent, indicating that residents should brace for a wet and chilly day.

In view of an active western disturbance influencing the region, a yellow alert has been issued for districts including Amritsar and Ludhiana, which border Jalandhar. The advisory warns of rain, thunderstorms, and the possibility of hail over the next 48 hours.

Meteorologists say the changing conditions could disrupt daily routines, especially in the early morning and evening hours when cold winds are expected to intensify. Farmers and commuters have been advised to remain cautious, as sudden showers and reduced visibility could affect travel and agricultural activities.

Authorities have urged people to stay updated with weather bulletins and take necessary precautions against cold-related health issues, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory ailments.
