Mumbai: Continuous overnight rainfall brought Mumbai to a standstill on Saturday, leaving large parts of the city waterlogged, disrupting air travel, and resulting in two deaths.

According to officials, a landslide struck a residential colony in Varsha Nagar, Vikhroli West, killing two residents and injuring two others. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that rescue teams have been deployed to clear debris and assist those affected.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Raigad, warning of extremely heavy showers at isolated locations.

Several low-lying areas, such as Sion, Kurla, Chembur, and Andheri, reported severe waterlogging, with one to one-and-a-half feet of water accumulating in some stretches. The Andheri subway was closed, while long traffic snarls were seen on the Western Express Highway.

Between Friday morning and early Saturday, Vikhroli recorded 248.5 mm of rain, followed by Santacruz (232.5 mm) and Sion (221 mm). Heavy rainfall continued through the night, with Marol Fire Station logging 216 mm and multiple other locations crossing 200 mm within hours.

Air traffic was also disrupted, with delays reported at Mumbai International Airport. IndiGo Airlines issued an advisory asking passengers to confirm flight timings before travelling, adding that teams were “closely monitoring the situation” to minimize inconvenience.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors wherever possible as more heavy showers are expected in the coming hours.
